Monywa is located northwest of Mandalay on the banks of the River Chindwin. The major tourist attraction in Monywa is the Mohnyin Thambuddhei Paya, a Buddhist temple with a huge stupa reminiscent of Indonesia’s Borobudur. Built in 1303, it was reconstructed in 1939. It is said to hold over 500,000 images of Buddha.
